For 16 years, our Rockingham Quarry Team has partnered with Ducks Unlimited (DU), the world’s largest and most effective private waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization. Our team recently marked this milestone with a $25,000 contribution to DU’s Southeast Wetlands Initiative.

“People suggest and offer to put up wood duck boxes all the time,” said former DU North Carolina State Chairman Gary Payne. “The difference here is that Vulcan has put forth the physical and financial resources to properly locate, install, monitor, and protect these boxes and the wetlands that they are placed on. What started as a small project in the quarry itself has become a really robust conservation effort throughout the county.”

The partnership started when Payne was a CSX locomotive operator. One of his routes introduced him to Vulcan where he hauled finished materials from Rockingham Quarry to customers throughout the Southeast.

On one visit, Payne noticed a collection of wood duck boxes that our team had installed along a creek bed on our property. This led to the long-term partnership that has had a profound impact on wildlife and wetland conservation in the area.

To date, across our footprint we have committed over $100,000 to Ducks Unlimited’s conservation mission.
